How to Apply for a Japan Multiple Entry Visa in Hong Kong
- VFS Global appointment email receipt. Need to print it.
- Passport photo taken within 6 months (3.5*4.5cm, white background). I took it in Shenzhen when I was there, 25 RMB, and the staff did some retouching.
- Hong Kong ID card original and photocopy. The photocopy should be 1:1 scale. Only the front side is needed.
- Passport original and photocopy. Personal information page and the page before it - just put them in the scanner and print both together. Also include pages with previous Japan landing permission stickers. My previous trip to Japan was with an old passport, and my new passport has a page showing the number of the previously held old passport, which also needs to be printed.
- Home Return Permit (港澳通行证) original and photocopy. Must be 1:1 scale copy. My printout was too large, so the staff re-copied it for free. The back side should also be needed. Online users suggest that if the date on the back of the permit is unclear, you need to print it from the immigration mini-program.
- Hong Kong residence visa e-visa.
- Bank statements (6 months for multiple entry, Chinese acceptable), use Hong Kong bank monthly statements.
- Japan visa application form (download from consulate’s official website, can be filled electronically with handwritten signature).
- Multiple entry to Japan reason statement. I found a reference online and modified it. Online users say it should include passport number, name, and today’s date. I used Simplified Chinese.
- 640 HKD. As of 2025, Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay are accepted.
You can choose to have your passport delivered by courier or pick it up in person. I chose courier delivery. The courier company is HK Express, delivery fee is 78 HKD.
Online users say that all places requiring signatures should match the signature on your passport as closely as possible.
Online users say that Hong Kong e-visa has “The holder may enter Hong Kong for the first time on or before xxx”, and you need the small white slip. If you lose the small white slip, you can get a replacement at the Immigration Department.
If you want to walk-in, it’s recommended to arrive at 6 AM.
If money is not an issue, you can pay extra to make an appointment on VFS, which costs around 200+ HKD.
For example, if you apply on a Wednesday, it’s usually ready the following Wednesday. You’ll receive an email around 3 PM. The courier can deliver it on Thursday. Personal signature is not required - anyone at the delivery address can receive it. If no one is there to receive it, they should leave a notification in your mailbox, and you can pick it up at the designated post office.
If your documents are complete, it’s very fast. Staff start checking documents around 8:20 AM. I was the 4th person and finished around 8:40 AM.
After completion, you’ll receive a receipt that you can use to check progress on the VFS Global website. However, I couldn’t successfully check - that website is terrible, the captcha keeps报错.
